When the motorcycle division
of Husqvarna was purchased in 1987 by Italian brand Cagiva, some of the Swedish
engineers stayed behind in Sweden and founded Husaberg Motor AB in 1988.
The name for the new brand was only made official when founder Thomas Gustavsson
entered and enduro on one of his hand built machines, he was forced to declare a
brand for his machine, and the name chosen was Husaberg. Building lightweight,
high performance 4 stroke machines in an era completely dominated by 2 stroke
bikes, Husaberg struggled until it was bought by KTM in 1995. Many of the
designs and innovations first seen on Husaberg bikes now show up on KTM’s a few
years later, making Husaberg the de facto mule brand for the Austrian
manufacturer. Some recent innovations include fuel injection and a laid
over, 70 degree engine with the crankshaft stacked on top of the transmission,
and an under the seat fuel tank.
