In 2000 Cannondale Bicycles
made a concentrated effort to enter the off-road motorcycle market. Starting
with the 400cc MX400, and its sibling models EX and XC, Cannondale hit the
ground running with a slew of technological leaps, including reverse flow head,
fuel injection, and oil storage in the frame. While these changes worked well,
Cannondale lost money on every motorcycle it sold due to high production costs,
and ceased production altogether after these losses drove it to bankruptcy in
2004. In the split up, the motorcycle division changed hands several times,
finally ending up as a part of ATK, which now produces essentially the same
bikes under their banner.
