Formed in 1946 in Post War
Japan, Honda began by using small surplus army engines to power its first bikes.
The first ‘genuine’ Honda was produced in 1949 as the model D. In another
10 years, Honda began exporting its bikes to the large US market, beginning the
real history of success that is Honda. At its peak production in 1982, Honda
manufactured nearly 3 million motorcycles, thanks in part to its wildly popular
CB line of bikes. Even after a slowdown of sales to about 500,000 units in 2006,
Honda still outsells its Japanese competition. From 50cc kids bikes to world
champion 450cc motocross bikes, from performance road racing bikes to it’s
larger than life Goldwing, Honda is known for its superior quality and
reliability, and continues to be at the forefront of motorcycle
engineering.
